BRAZIL'S  POWER GENERATION  SECTOR

Brazil's power generation sector is composed of the National Interconnected System, which covers the country’s more heavily populated areas, and the Isolated Systems, which are concentrated in the country's North region.

The five Isolated Systems combined cover 45% of Brazil’s territory, but account for only 2% of the country’s total electricity demand. As opposed to the National Interconnected System, in which hydroelectric power plants predominate, the Isolated Systems are mainly supplied by oil and diesel-powered thermoelectric plants.

Despite the high concentration of hydroelectricity generation in Brazil, the share of other energy sources in the national energy matrix has grown in recent years, reducing Brazil's reliance on water resources as well as its vulnerability to fluctuations in rainfall.

Brazil's thermoelectric power generation, which accounts for 20% of the country’s total installed capacity, is highly concentrated in gas-powered plants. The high concentration of this energy fuel tends to decline over the coming years, due to the current limitations of its supply, as well as the growing incentives implemented to promote alternative energy sources (wind, small hydroelectric plants and biomass).
